Hashtag (#):

For example, if I were to tweet about social media marketing with the hashtag “#SMM” anyone looking for information about social media would see my tweet in their search results.

Retweet (RT): 

Sharing someone else’s tweet on your timeline. A retweet is always displayed in quotation marks, like this one: “RT @Mrs.XYZ”You can’t outsource leadership.” —@Mr.XYZ” If you want to add your thoughts to someone else’s tweet, use the hashtag #hashtag (#) or mention @username.

Mention (@): 

Mentioning a user is a way of bringing their attention to something you share with them or asking them a question. You must also use an @ sign before the name of anyone you mention.

  • Official email address: You’ll need a dedicated email address that contains your or your brand name.


You have to make sure that your account is also notable. Twitter will either directly reach out to you or take the help of third-party businesses to ensure the notability of your account.

Twitter uses the following type of information to ensure the notability of your account:

  • Presence in News media: You should be able to provide a link to a News article that references you or your brand. It is important that the article is a piece of actual news and not promoted or self-published blog.
  • Presence in Google Trends or Wikipedia: Twitter may ask you to provide them a Google Trends link and/or a Wikipedia page that mentions you or your brand and shows how many people are searching for your brand on Google.
  • Follower or Mention Count: Another Twitter notability criterion is to ensure you have a follower or mention count high enough to be in the 0.05% of active accounts in your geographic region.

High activity:

Twitter has a couple of rules that your account adheres to for qualifying as an active account. The following is what Twitter is looking for:

  • A Complete profile:  Your profile must have everything that is mentioned in the “Creating your Profile” section of this blog.
  • Actively used:  At the time of verification, your account must be logged in and used within six months. Your account should adhere to Twitter’s active account policy.
  • Secured and verified: The email address (you can get it from LinkedIn) and phone number should be confirmed and verified.
  • Twitter Rules Violation: Twitter has rules that every user has to follow. Violating these rules results in a 12-hour or 7-day lockout period. To qualify for the blue check, your account must have abided by these rules in the past 12 months.
